Spring is an incredible time to visit South Africa!  Not only are the gardens in bloom but the wildflowers are exquisite.  Who better to experience this floral wonderland with than Panayoti Kelaidis.  Panayoti is a specialist in South African flora and a renown horticulturalist at Denver Botanic Gardens.  Visit public and private gardens in Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Western Cape and explore the Great Karoo Nature Reserve for wildflowers.  Along the way, learn about the history, culture, cuisine and wine of this fascinating country.  A post-tour safari near Kruger Park has been arranged.

The January Timket Festival is a wonderful manifestation of the Epiphany pageant as thousands of colorfully robed Coptic monks carry replicas of the “Ark of the Covenant” from their churches to be worshipped and anointed with holy water.  We will have an opportunity to enjoy the festival activities as well as visiting important cultural sites in and around the cities of Addis, Bahir Dar, Gondar, Lalibela, Axum, and Dire Dawa.

Ethiopia: Meskel Festival

Among Ethiopia’s Coptic Christian traditions is the September Meskel Festival marking the finding of the true cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified.  The festival dates back 1600 years and is celebrated with yellow Meskel daisies placed on top of huge bonfires in the evenings.  Ornately robed priests carrying silver Coptic crosses dance with followers around the fires.  Besides participating in the festival activities we will traverse Ethiopia and visit many of the culturally significant sites in and around the cities of Bahir Dar, Gondar, Lalibela, Axum, Dire Dawa and Addis.
